Standard Chartered is a leading multinational banking and financial services group headquartered in London, formed in 1969 through the merger of two historic British institutions: the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China (founded in 1853) and the Standard Bank of British South Africa (founded in 1862). Unlike many traditional Western banks, Standard Chartered focuses almost entirely on corporate, commercial, and retail banking across emerging markets in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, with a particularly deep heritage in Hong Kong where it opened its first branch in 1859. Dual-listed on the London and Hong Kong stock exchanges, it operates across dozens of global markets and remains notable as the oldest of Hong Kong's three commercial banks authorized to issue local currency banknotes.
